"We've been cautious with our cash reserves, because we were losing money, but with our recent return to profitability, we think it's time to acquire some valuable resources," said Jobs. Industry pundits point to the early release of Office '98 on the Macintosh as a clear sign that this deal has been in the works for some time. "It makes sense," says Peter Seebach, a noted industry pundit. "Apple is a diversified company, with hardware, software, and merchandising businesses. They've been looking for a smaller, software-only, company to snatch up, to boost their software business." And what a boost it will be! Microsoft's annual budget for "flushing money down the toilet" is larger than Apple's net worth.
