Intentional incompatibility? (2005/06/19)
One of the most incredibly standardized things in the history of computing is the Plain Old Serial Port. These little buggers haven’t changed detectably since 1990 or earlier.

So, about two years ago, I bought a G4 mac. And it was a demo model, or possibly a return, so I bought AppleCare for it. There was some trouble; they had the machine marked as sold in August of 2002, not March of 2003. But I sent the receipt in, and they said it was covered.

I’m doing more Apple-related work these days, so I decided it was time to go ahead and get a G5. I got the second-cheapest G5 Mac they sell, the dual 2.0Ghz. (Dual-processor is a big win.)

Okay, I admit to being a little biased towards Kinesis Ergonomic keyboards… But it’s hard not to be sorta tempted by the DataHand keyboard, which is honestly one of the coolest-looking keyboards I’ve ever seen.

If you program in Java, take a look at Buoy. It’s a public domain interface toolkit that makes Swing look pathetic, ill-considered, and bloated. I mean, not that this is hard… But Buoy is nice.
