Allied Telesyn almost settled. (2005/03/03)
Argh! This is the junk fax case I rarely talk about. It’s mostly-nearly settled, but they want terms to be confidential until after they’ve mailed checks, because there would be fewer claims that way. They have done the whole nine yards with silly and/or false defenses, and I’m not inclined to be cooperative. Furthermore, how am I supposed to keep this information secret from journalists when I’ve been discussing the negotiations with my mom all along?

The idea of money laundering is to take money that is in some way dirty and make it clean. For instance, a business could take in a lot of cash, some of it stolen, but as long as that’s normal for that business, it’s hard to prove anything.

Ace Mortgage wanted to settle, but they don’t get it. They are trying to talk about settlement, but they want confidentiality and a time limit on the no-faxing rule. Hah. I don’t think they get it. The reason I settle fax cases for money is that people who send junk faxes generally don’t get ethics; all they hear is indistinct buzzing noises. This means they have to pay money, or they won’t believe it’s real. They also need an agreement not to fax, or they will anyway.

Gather round, readers, and I will tell you the story of a junk faxer, demonstrating once and for all the fine grasp of legal subtleties one learns to expect. I believe these people may actually be the dumbest junk faxers I have ever sued.

So, I got a call billed to my account “on behalf of Nationwide Connections, Inc.”. Listing the phone number 1-800-944-9646, and the web page www.oanweb.com. They claim that we got a 4-minute collect call, on November 7th, at 11:08 AM. We didn’t; our caller ID log shows no calls at all on November 7th, not even “OUT OF AREA”.

If you are ever thinking about writing, and you encounter an entity using the domain “fifth-letter.com” or the name “Strata Magazine”, AVOID THEM LIKE THE SPAMMING PLAGUE THEY ARE! They have been spamming me for a LONG time. They scrape addresses off of web sites, and spam spam spam the night away. They do this despite multiple requests that they go away. The one good thing they ever did was stop for a while, but they started up again.

Well, here it is. The first fax I got from “Rasheed”. Who’s Rasheed? We don’t know. We know very little about him. What we do know is this: On March 11th, 2003, he sent me this fax:
